Skills assessment first: why the order of steps decides your skilled migration timeline

It can be easier to start with an English test because it is simple to book, while an assessment involves more records. Read the assessment rules early nonetheless: does the qualification fit, what experience is required and which periods may be recognised? Without these answers, a points estimate can look sufficient without being supported. Once the requirements are understood, several preparations can proceed together.

Start with duties and qualifications

A job title is only a starting point. Compare the actual work, level of responsibility and education with the occupation proposed. Imagine a laboratory employee considering similarly named codes under different authorities, one requiring two years of experience. That does not justify choosing the other code to avoid the wait. The alternative must genuinely fit the duties and qualification, especially if it is a “not elsewhere classified” category.

Understand which experience can support a claim

ACS and VETASSESS assessments may identify when the applicant meets the relevant skill level under their assessment pathway. Read this alongside the visa points rules rather than assuming every year of employment attracts points. In a hypothetical case, eight years of employment may support only five years for the claim concerned. An invitation based on a higher unsupported claim can create a problem at visa stage.

Employment references are the real work

References commonly need dates, hours, position, duties and an authorised signature on employer letterhead. Obtaining them can take time, especially if a former business has closed. If a letter is unavailable, check which alternatives the authority accepts before relying on declarations, payslips or tax records. Early preparation gives you time to resolve these difficulties.

A sensible sequence

1. Choose the occupation with the pathway in view: authority, occupation lists, state nomination options.
2. Lodge the skills assessment, and use the waiting time for the English test.
3. Submit the expression of interest only once you know your assessed occupation and your true points.
4. Apply for state nomination with the assessment and English in hand, which most states require anyway.

Checking early shows which steps can begin now and which need more time or experience. Plans may still change, but you reduce the risk of discovering an unsupported occupation or points claim after paying fees, receiving an invitation or approaching visa expiry.
