It is understandable to ask how much evidence is enough. Imagine one couple submitting three photographs and a lease, while another uploads eight hundred pages without explaining the contents. In either hypothetical case, the reader may still struggle to understand the relationship. Consider what each document establishes, when it relates to and how it fits the account you have given.
The four aspects
For de facto relationships, regulation 1.09A of the Migration Regulations 1994 addresses financial arrangements, the household, social aspects and commitment. Regulation 1.15A addresses the corresponding matters for spouses. Evidence is considered in the relationship's overall circumstances, rather than against a fixed document count for each heading. Where records are limited, explain the actual arrangements and consider other relevant supporting material.
Financial aspects
In a hypothetical example, a newly opened and unused joint account shows that the account exists, but little about shared expenses. Records of contributions, rent and groceries over two years give more context. A joint lease or mortgage, insurance, superannuation nominations and support payments may also be relevant. Separate accounts can reflect the couple's real arrangements; explain how costs are divided and provide the available records.
Nature of the household
This concerns where you live and how you manage the household. Bank letters, bills, vehicle registration, Medicare correspondence and other records sent to the shared address over time may support residence. Your statement can add what those documents cannot: who cooks, who handles payments and how you care for children. Photographs can illustrate the home but should be read alongside the address evidence and explanation.
Social aspects
How did friends and relatives come to know you as a couple? Weddings, visits, holidays and birthdays may provide relevant examples. Date photographs and identify the people shown. Form 888 statements can also explain how the writer knows the relationship and what they have observed, rather than simply offering a general endorsement.
Nature of the commitment
Commitment can be understood through your history, knowledge of each other's lives and plans made together. Explain when you met, when you regarded yourselves as partners, decisions you have shared and how you managed difficult periods. Wills or beneficiary nominations can be relevant where they exist. I help make the account readable, while the experiences and feelings remain yours to provide and confirm.
The three mistakes I see most
Evidence bunched around the lodgement date. Case officers look for continuity. Spread the evidence across the whole relationship.
Unexplained differences from earlier applications. If an earlier visitor application described you as single while the current account describes an existing relationship, establish what was asked and why the answers differ. Some inaccuracies may raise PIC 4020 issues and need specific assessment.
Unlabelled uploads. A file named "IMG_4821" tells the officer nothing. Name each document by what it proves and who it belongs to, and include an index.
When reviewing the application, choose an event from the statement and try to locate its evidence. If it is difficult for you to find, the decision-maker may have the same problem. Clear file names and an index make the application easier to check and help you identify what needs updating while it is pending.

Early assessment checks help you identify a supported occupation and understand the experience and points you can claim. English preparation can run alongside this work, but occupation eligibility should not be left until the EOI stage.
The first checks after a refusal include review rights, the deadline, fees and the required documents. This article explains those steps and how the ART may consider the matter.
