Genuine Student replaced Genuine Temporary Entrant from March 2024. Study must be the primary reason for seeking the visa. An intention to consider a lawful longer-term option after graduation does not by itself contradict that purpose. You still need to explain how the course relates to your previous education, work and plans.
What you are actually asked
Questions cover your current family, community, employment and economic circumstances; the course and provider; expected benefits; and other relevant information. Responses are limited, generally to 150 words each under the applicable form, so focus on details that answer the question. Visa history and previous Australian study may also require explanation.
Give reasons the reader can understand and check
For a hypothetical comparison, “I want to study business to develop my career” gives little detail. A fuller answer might explain: “I work in accounting and want to study the Master of Professional Accounting at ACU to address gaps in my knowledge. I have compared the course with CPA Australia knowledge requirements and the criteria for finance management roles I intend to apply for.” This illustrates a connection, not a statement to copy. Check programme content, professional recognition and any salary claim before using them in a real application.
Why this provider
Your reasons may include a specialisation, practical placement, professional recognition, proximity to family or a transfer arrangement. Lower cost can be relevant too. Explain what you compared and why those priorities matter to you, rather than inventing a more impressive reason than the one that led to your decision.
Your history has to fit
Changing fields or having interrupted study does not rule out a serious new plan. Explain what happened, why the earlier choice did not work and what has changed. The reader needs to understand the difficult part of the history as well as the future plans.
How much help is appropriate
Help with organisation, English expression and evidence checks can be useful. I discuss your circumstances in the language you prefer, draft from the information provided and review it with you. If a sentence does not reflect your meaning or you cannot explain it, it needs attention before lodgement. You may be asked about what you have confirmed in the application.
Discuss your circumstances with a registered migration agent
Book a consultation to discuss the requirements that may apply to you, any concerns about your case and what needs to be prepared. You are welcome to speak in Vietnamese or English.
