Form 888: how to brief your witnesses so their declarations actually help
Form 888 allows someone familiar with the couple to explain what they know. Useful statements draw on specific events that the writer remembers and can confirm.

A friend or relative asked to complete Form 888 may not know where to start. They may say the couple care for each other without explaining how they know. A useful account describes the acquaintance, contact and events observed. Check the application guidance and any Department request for the number of statements needed rather than imposing a universal figure.
Choosing witnesses
Consider people who know both partners in ordinary life, such as a housemate, relative, friend or colleague. Each may know a different period. What matters is the information they can provide, rather than their title or closeness to only one partner.
What to tell them
Explain that the form helps the Department understand the social aspects of the relationship. You can invite the writer to consider the following subjects without supplying their answers:
How and when they met each of you, and how they know you are a couple
Where they have seen you together, how often, and what they observed about how you live: shared home, shared finances if they know, how you speak about each other and your plans
Any events they attended with you: a wedding, an engagement, a birthday, a hospital visit, a move
Anything about the relationship's history they witnessed, including difficult periods, if relevant
The writer should answer the current form's questions and sign their own account. Additional pages can be clearly identified where space is insufficient; there is no reason to force relevant detail onto a single page. Avoid circulating a common statement with only the names changed.
Getting the form right
Use the current Form 888. The writer must be at least 18 and know the relationship, with identity evidence as instructed. The form does not require a JP witness or Australian citizenship or permanent residence. Check the signature, date and attachments before upload.
Consistency with the rest of the file
Imagine a writer recalling a move in 2022 while the couple's statement says 2023. Ask why they remember that date; perhaps they mean a temporary stay rather than the later move. Records may help check memory, but the final statement must reflect what the writer believes is true, rather than being changed solely to match another account.
A supporting witness does not need polished prose. Explaining how they know the couple, when they see them and why they believe the relationship continues is more informative than general praise. I can explain the form and check completion, while the writer remains responsible for the facts they confirm.
